2016 TEDxHonolulu Sustainability

TEDxHonolulu has earned a Green Event Certification from Hawai‘i’s Green Business Awards Program for 3 consecutive years.

TEDxHonolulu established a Sustainability Team in 2013 as part of its efforts to cultivate community and to share in the collective responsibility to malama ‘aina, both locally—in Hawai‘i—and globally. Sustainability is an idea worth spreading. To this end, we at TEDxHonolulu view our events both as an opportunity to avoid waste, reduce energy consumption, and reduce our overall carbon footprint— as well as a way to encourage similar stewardship and make sustainability accessible to our volunteers, attendees, speakers and partners. Our mission is to “greenify” our events through conventional and creative means that will have an enduring positive impact on our environment and community.

KVIBE (Kalihi Valley Instructional Bicycle Exchange) provides their super friendly Bike Valet services at our events to reward participants who ride their bikes.

Don’t want to pay for parking or deal with traffic? Want to start your morning off with a bike ride, new friends, and exercise?

Join one of 4 Bike Pools to get to the event and help us reduce our event’s carbon footprint! We have 4 *surprise* community members assigned to ride from Waikiki, Ala Moana, and Kakaako. Check out our Bike Pool Event Page and stay updated on intersections, departure times and Bike Pool leaders identities.

Consider alternative transportation:

• Bike! For our main events, we like to team up with the Hawai‘i Bicycling League and KVIBE to offer you a safe & secure bike valet for your convenience!

• Take TheBus – Our main events take place at locations easily serviced by public transportation.

• Catch a cab with conscience! EcoCab is Hawai‘i’s first all Hybrid taxi service leaving a significantly less carbon footprint on our environment. 808-979-1010.

• Carpool – The more in the car, the merrier.  Keep this in mind for car share and ride share options!

• Walk, skip, jog, roller-skate, rollerblade, sprint! – Relish in the fact we have the perfect weather to get anywhere by foot!

TEDxHonolulu’s Sustainability Team has partnered with Blue Planet Foundation’s Clean Transportation Team to let you test drive electric vehicles at our next event!

We’re partnering with local catering teams to serve a predominately local and organic vegan meal to all attendees in the park across from the event venue. And we’re giving everyone reusable utensils and compostable plates.

We only print materials that are absolutely necessary, and we recycle everything! We also manage and measure waste generated during our main event and divert recyclables and compostables away from the landfill.
