TEDxHonolulu had a range of talented and inspirational speakers try out for our first auditions last Saturday.  Thank you to all who took the time out to audition for this great event.  After the auditions were over, the X-Team compiled a list of 11 items that will help the next round of speakers improve their chance in sharing the TEDxHonolulu platform on 11.11.11.  Here they are:

1. Practice, Practice, Practice. By winging it on the day, will decrease your chances of getting selected.  Practice, but don’t be scripted.
2. Come early. About 15 minutes at least prior to your audition.  That allows time to fill out some paperwork and get your stuff together.
3. Bring a clicker if you use a presentation. If you need to use a powerpoint or keynote, always be prepared with your own equipment.
4. Tie in the “It’s About Time” Theme. This is the most challenging.  Do not just complete the sentence, but incorporate the theme throughout your presentation so that it resonates with your message well.
5. Dress for success. Yes this is Hawaii, however, this may be your chance to broadcast your idea to the world through TED itself.  You don’t want to appear as you just walked in off the beach.  Business casual is recommended.
6. Don’t pitch anything. You are not here to sell your idea, just share it.
7. Don’t talk all about yourself. This is larger than you.  This is about what your idea can do for others and potentially the world.
8. Watch your time. 5 minutes is 5 minutes.  No more, no less.  5 minutes to setup and 5 minutes to present.
9. Connect with the team. We are here to help you 100%.  We want to see you succeed and spread your idea!  Connecting with us shows us that you care also.
10. 1 main idea. Not 5 different ideas.  You don’t have the time.  Focus and hone in on 1 main thing, 1 main idea.
11. Have fun! This is your time to shine.  It’s not about impressing the judges.  Just be yourself and share your idea with passion and enthusiasm!
