Announcing our first 3 speakers for TEDxHonolulu 2016 FLOW!

Speaker Curators Rachael and Jennifer introduce the first group of speakers selected for the July 9 TEDxHonolulu FLOW event…

It’s an exciting time for the speaker curator team as we help prep this year’s presenters. We’ve got an amazing lineup of speakers for the July 9 TEDxHonolulu 2016 event FLOW. We’ll be introducing all of our speakers over the next few weeks, but here’s a sneak peek at 3 of our local superstars.

Due to a health emergency, writer, DJ and producer Christa Wittmier has needed to withdraw from this year’s TEDxHonolulu event. Please read Christa’s statement below.

“It breaks my heart to have to step down from the TEDxHonolulu stage today, as I have just had surgery yesterday and am on dose 6 of 15 of whole brain radiation to treat a breast cancer recurrence. I was going to share with you the biggest lessons cancer taught me, which will always be relevant whether I am sick or fully healthy. Of the countless lessons learned this past year the biggest ones are so so simple: love yourself, help each other, you have more power inside you than you think, enjoy your life and every day – every moment – is a new chance to try again. I may not have physically been able to get up and share this with you today, but I trust that you will still get so much out of this event and all the hard work everyone has put in to it.”

MEHNERTheadshotVERTAccording to architect Bettina Mehnert, “contemporary architecture is a reflection of who we as a society are in this moment of time. The designs from the past and the present can FLOW and live together, creating a formal and social dynamic that is a fusion of clarity, risk-taking, and creative intensity. If done correctly, future generations will reap as much, if not more, benefit from our built environment than we do.” Bettina is President and CEO of AHL Design. She’s a descendent of three generations of architects, a Fellow in the American Institute of Architecture (AIA) and an active member of AIA Honolulu.

NATAROVheadshotVERTAndrei Natarov writes that “communicating science to the public needs to be based on FLOW ideas, and while it’s necessary to be precise in communicating science, being precise is not nearly as painful as many assume!” Andrei is a researcher at the International Pacific Research Center, School of Ocean and Earth Science and Technology (SOEST) at the University of Hawaii at Manoa, whose research takes him around the globe. He uses dynamics of FLOW –a combination of challenges and rewards, the familiar and the mind-blowing– to demonstrate how science can help us better understand our world and make better decisions as we recognize the role science plays in all aspects of modern civilization.
